Video Projects for EFL/ESL

This session will help teachers of EFL/ESL develop lesson plans for video projects to use with their students of various levels. It will give teachers a chance to try out ideas and share problems, resources, and successes in using video. Participants will need a video camera (or digital photo camera with video capacity) and some familiarity with easy-to-use, free video editing tools. Some technical help will be available, but the focus will be on pedagogy and lesson development rather than the technical aspects.

Target Audience: Video-using teachers of languages who already have some ability to create their own videos.

SYLLABUS (in brief)


Week 1

(Moderators: ALL) Introductions, Session info

Assignment:

  1. Join this wikispace (link at the top of the menu), and join our Yahoo Group (blue button).
  2. Put your short bio on the Introductions page here in our wiki.
  3. Make a video introduction (link to it from our wiki Introductions page and give a shout on the elist).
  4. Respond to the forum questions in a message to the Yahoo group.

Forum (write to our YG elist): How you are currently using or have you used video in the past (include your teaching setting/level of student)? What advantages/disadvantages have you found in using video?

Be sure to write to the list or to the moderators if you have any trouble with your membership in either space.


Week 2

(Moderators: Kristi and Cora) Using Pre-existing video/Integrating Video for Instructional Purposes (using online and other video, Web 2.0 tools, freeware, other software)

Assignment:
1. Browse and then submit a lesson plan or activity to our Workshop page that uses online video or a video clip from a film or other source and/or a(n) idea(s) for using Web 2.0 tools such as Jumpcut, VoiceThread, BubblePLY, or others you may know of or that are suggested by the group.

2. Respond to the forum questions in a message to the Yahoo group.

Forum (write to our YG elist): What are the pros/cons of using pre-existing video in language instruction? What Web 2.0 tools have you used for video projects? Which do you recommend and why? What are pros and cons of a Web 2.0 tool that you have explored for video projects ?



Week 3

(Moderators: Ryan -- tech-related issues; Kristi and Cora -- project ideas) Pre-production (Overview of equipment, editing programs, audio, script writing, storyboarding) and Video Project Ideas for Language Courses

Assignment:
1. The final project will be the submission of either a short instructor-produced or student-produced video project. Submit a brief proposal this week of what you intend to do for this project, including what lessons or activities will lead up to the project and any ideas that you have for post-project lessons or activities and assessment/evaluation, if the project is student-produced video.
2. Respond to the forum questions in a message to the Yahoo group.

Forum (write to our YG elist): What video editing programs do you / have you used? What are the challenges of video editing you have experienced or that you can anticipate? Tell us more about your proposed project: For whom is it intended? What are the objectives/desired outcomes? What problems do you anticipate? How will you measure the effectiveness of the video project?


Week 4

(Moderators: Cora and Kristi) Teacher-produced video for instruction and creating exercises/quizzes; creating screencasts (using commercial software such as Captivate/Camtasia or using comparable free programs such as CamStudio, Screencast-O-Matic, ScreenToaster, or others); and vodcasting (videoblogging)

Assignment:
  1. Explore and then practice with at least one of the screencast software suggested by the group.
  2. Work on your final project.
  3. Respond to the forum questions in a message to the Yahoo group.

Forum (write to our YG elist): How have you used or how would you use video you produced in your instruction? Explain. What are the challenges? How would you use screencasting? How can instructors measure the effectiveness of using the instructional videos they produce? How can instructors evaluate student projects?


Week 5

(Moderators: Ryan, Kristi, and Cora) Student-produced video projects (integrating the project while addressing course outcomes, managing the projects, assigning roles, evaulating projects/using rubrics, etc.)

Assignment:

  1. Explore some student-produced instructional video projects displayed online. (You will find many links in our EVO Video Archives)
  2. Final project submission (either a short instructor-produced or student-produced video project).
  3. Respond to the forum questions in a message to the Yahoo group.

Forum: What are the strengths and weaknesses of the student and/or instructional video projects you have viewed? What are some ideas you have for managing the projects? What are some ideas you have for evaluating student learning outcomes?

Feel free to join our EVO Video Archives so that you can add your projects and lesson plans there.



Week 6

(Moderators: All) Issues related to publishing, copyright, online video sharing; session wrap-up

Assignment:

  1. View some of the video sharing sites to explore their advantages as communication media.
  2. Session evaluation from the EVO Coordination Team (link to follow)

Forum
(write to our YG elist): Discuss publication/copyright issues and ways to share video online. What kinds of issues, lesson strategies, and Web sites have you found of interest during this EVO session.
